Description

Andy Warhol’s pop paintings and Keith Haring’s dancing figures have one thing above all in common: recognition value. However, the two artists used different techniques and formal language for their characteristic signature styles. Haring used simple, sweeping styles and created iconic figures and symbols. He left them everywhere – on canvases, on t-shirts and in the New York streets. In contrast to Haring’s belief that “your line is your personality,” Warhol remained true to his Pop Art strategy. His works of the 1980s are characterized by repetitions and vibrant colors, but also by abstract painting. He used his studio, the Factory, to disseminate the motifs by means of screen printing techniques, film and photography. With their works, both artists challenged traditional ideas of art production and authorship.
